Saint Phalle In Escondido

The road to San Diego is full of hidden treasures. On of them is Queen Califia's Magical Circle, the last major international project by French-American artist Niki de Saint Phalle.
Set in Escondido's Kit Carson Park, Queen Califia's Magical Circle is inspired by California's mythic, historic and cultural roots. The garden, like the state itself, takes its name from the legendary black Amazon queen, Califia, who was believed to rule a terrestrial paradise of gold and riches.

This sculpture garden bears the brilliant, unique mosaic ornamentation that is part of Saint Phalle's later work. It's an extraordinary feat for the eye, and a truly magical experience.
