French Dinosaurs

French artists Claude & François-Xavier Lalanne are renowned for their sculptures blending animal and plant themes. I fondly remember a retrospective of their work in the Bois de Boulogne's Jardins de Bagatelle in Paris. François-Xavier also designed the Halles' Jardin Lalanne.
When the City of Santa Monica called on private developers to refurb and manage The Promenade a few years ago -- an open air mall two blocks from the beach -- they commissioned the French couple to design its northern and southern landmarks. The Promenade is a highly scripted, commercial space, but the Lalannes' dinosaurs are like a secret clin d'oeil.
