Tacky Christmas

The plastic Christmas trees are back on the Santa Monica Promenade. Real trees are "too expensive," say local authorities, who call the ugly ersatz "whimsical". Rather artifical -- but isn't it the perfect metaphor for Southern California Chrismas time, which remains surreal to a Euro: no snow, no freezing weather, no scarves or mittens. Simply flip flops and goldious sunshine.
