sanat monica pier

LAist has a fascinating story on Santa Monica's offshore gambling in the 1930s, and the ensuing battle between gangsters and law enforcement that inspired Noir author Raymond Chandler's Farewell, my lovely. Our 90-year old neighbor remembers her brother taking the water taxi to bet his life on gambling ships. Another vignette of L.A.'s rich history, buried as it is under layers of constant reinvention.
