Mixed Salad

Urbanists and sociologists often argue that L.A. is not a melting pot, but a mixed salad -- where each ingredient retains its own flavor rather than blend in a common purée. Cultural identity and community prevails over integration as advocated in France.
L.A. is a mixed salad all right, with 224 different languages reported spoken, celebrating diversity. Our corner shop owner is Latino, my hairdresser Italian, the mani-pedi Vietnamese, the carpet cleaner Jamaïcan, the local deli Chinese, the car repair Armenian, the grocery cashier Norwegian, the UPS driver Togolese. There's also the Tex-Mex called Casablanca, the Turkish deli called Milano, the Cuban restaurant called Versailles, ...

Crazy -- and deeply fun.
