San Simeon Stars

Starfish taking the sun on the San Simeon pier, halfway between Los Angeles and San Francisco, on the way to the Hearst Castle.
Hearst's father had the pier built in 1878, after he bought up most of the San Simeon rancho. It was the only way to access the land for many decades. Hearst Castle architect Julia Morgan reinforced it in 1919, adding a railroad siding for shipments of construction supplies, and later art objects. [intel courtesy of Nancy Loe]
