Greening Catalina

Last time we went to Catalina -- the island off the coast of Los Angeles -- we took the Undersea Tour, observing the rich marine life through a glass bottom boat. We were disgusted by its diesel fumes, which suffocated the air and water. The tourism industry had also defaced the Avalon side of the island. Its unique ecology looked increasingly sacrificed. Citybeat's report that Catalina plans to clean its act and "make itself a test island for gas reduction" is therefore welcome news. Maybe we can breathe now. [more] photo via Google Images
