Misunderestimating Traffic

"City officials say Los Angeles may be underestimating the traffic generated by a raft of new development projects," writes the LAT. Apparently, the Planning Department uses a national model to predict how much traffic developments will generate. But it "forgets" an important detail: Los Angeles' signature sprawl and limited mass transit system. Ooops. Santa Monica is not doing any better, despite its compact size and relatively good public transport. With the plethora of new developments, its streets are morphing into mini-405's. photo Robert Gauthier/LAT
