Whopper Surf

They said it'd be coming -- and it came.
"The biggest oceanic swell in nearly two years pummeled Southern California" yesterday and today, writes the LAT. The photo above was taken by The Dude's mafia in Ventura. A friend from Europe thought that it didn't look so big -- until he realized that the black dots in the water were actual surfers. Some SoCal dudes were even lucky to "get in the pipe," as shown in this photo taken by Sundogg in El Segundo.
The waves in Santa Monica were closing in too fast for surfers to bother, but they gave the pier a good 12-foot lick. Other beaches had more fun, as these photos taken for LAT in Seal, Redondo and Newport beaches show. More pix here. Global surf reports here.
