Define The Norm

Screenshot of a banner ad on Yahoo. The animation plays on the cool theme, but what's interesting is that the dancing girl is rather plump.
Ads for mainstream American stores and products increasingly portray what the French would call grosses -- size 12 with a few extra pounds. A stark departure from the super-skinny models that prompted an outcry in Europe during the recent fashion shows.
Never the last to pick up on a trend, Jean-Paul Gaultier sent very shapely model Velvet down the runway in corset and garters. And on the other extreme, an 18 year-old Brazilian model died of anorexia this week. At 5 foot 8½, she weighted only 88 pounds. Can we have some "normality"?
