Mardi Gras On The Beach

Mardi Gras has a double entendre this year, between Carnival celebrations and Super Tuesday's political bazaar on February 5.
Clad in mythology-meets-fantasy costumes, Venice locals celebrated Fat Tuesday on the beach early yesterday, marching with a percussion band in a bead-throwing procession along the Boardwalk. "The grass-roots gathering began in Mar Vista seven years ago as a response to the feelings of fear, anxiety and loss of control resident Jessica Long and others around her felt after the September 11th attacks," writes The Argonaut. "Long's boyfriend and musician Johann Stein also wanted to bring the music and festivities he experienced growing up in New Orleans with Mardi Gras to the local area because he felt it was missing." Great fun. Slideshow here.
